The 2024 issue of NGC Review presents new research by three curators of the National Gallery of Canada. Andrea Kunard explores photography in Canada in the late 1950s and 1960s, with particular focus on photographer, critic and curator Philip Pocock and his pivotal role in promoting Canadian photography. Anabelle Kienle-Ponka examines the history of the Gallery’s acquisition of twelve paintings from the Princely Collections of Liechtenstein between 1953 and 1956. Euijung McGillis records her conversation with Japanese photographer Kan Azuma, focusing on his experiences during his decade-long stay in Canada in the 1970s, and sets his artistic practice in the context of Canadian photography at that time.
